1) Dawson: What if your community’s highest honor came in the form of a look-a-like gnome? That’s exactly the case in Dawson, Minnesota (a.k.a. Gnometown USA). For 28 years, Dawson residents have celebrated their most dedicated community leaders by carving a tipped hat statue and adding it to their Gnome Park to be visible always and celebrated at their annual Riverfest event. The Minnesota State Lottery recently featured the community in a commercial.
2) Cook County: A partnership between the Cook County Chamber of Commerce and a local organization called Moving Matters has brought a bountiful, beautiful array of art of communities in northeast Minnesota. On its fourth year, the Great Place Project has awarded local businesses, nonprofits and residents small grants for projects that “create small nooks of beauty in the built environment.” Recently announced, this year’s projects span from a pedal=powered charging station to an ADA compliant picnic table.
3) Itasca County: To expand their disaster recovery efforts, the Salvation Army of Itasca County will add a new resource for those in need — a traveling canteen. This kitchen on wheels will be dispatched when needed, both in Itasca County and beyond, to serve meals to volunteers, victims and responders.
