1. Willmar: for a local coffeehouse’s use of a simple “I Love Willmar” pin to close community divides this political season. Available in English, Spanish, Somali and Karen, the pins have become a welcoming sign for all residents in the city.
“We want to bring unity and love for Willmar,” Vicki Davis, co-owner of The Goodness coffeehouse, said. “I would love to see everyone in Willmar wearing them.”
2. Northeast Minnesota: for enhancing employers’ ability to attract and retain talent through the use of a newly-designed website, Northland Connection, that supplies economic development data and analysis.
“It’s really important data. It’s [a] really important tool for us. We really rely on a portal like this that’s accurate,” said Brian Hanson, President and CEO of the Area Partnership for Economic Expansion.
3. Alexandria and Windom: for lifting up local foods as a source of pride and economic development in rural Minnesota.
“Especially in southwestern Minnesota, we come from a farming community,” Mari Harries, Chef and Owner of River City Eatery. “This is the kind of farming that, even growing up in a rural area, I didn’t know existed. It’s been an awesome evolution to see where farming is going and how we can use it as a community.”
