1) Proctor: Resilience — it’s the cornerstone in many vibrant rural communities. For Proctor, Minnesota, it’s a way of life, according to a recent MinnPost story. Close to the big city of Duluth, Proctor does not fit the bill for your typical bedroom community. A vibrant main street, bustling businesses and a fully functioning school system illustrate just three parts of Proctor’s “special sauce” for a resilient community — which ultimately boils down to strong community engagement.
2) Willmar: “People always want bigger and better, but they don’t always want to get uncomfortable,” says Melissa Sorenson, a member of Willmar’s Vision 20/40 leadership program. To move their community forward, Willmar leaders knew they had to get the community ready and excited for change. The group embarked on a process to identify roadblocks to change and chart a sure path to a vibrant future. They learned some valuable lessons along the way…
3) All of Greater Minnesota: A rare occurrence to recognize all Greater Minnesota communities in one batch, but the work being done by the Minnesota Association of Development Organizations will surely touch many rural communities across the state. The Minnesota Association of Development Organizations, consisting of the nine Regional Development Commissions, recently released their DevelopMN plan, a comprehensive, coordinated look at economic development strategies in rural Minnesota.
