1) Crow Wing County: Today, sing the song of an unsung hero. That’s what Crow Wing County Administrator Timothy Houle did on Rural Reality MN radio this week when talking about public workers’ response to the destructive storms that torn through Brainerd earlier this summer. In the interview, he said (paraphrasing):
I hope that today some of your listeners will extend the same courtesy as they do veterans, to thank public employees for their great service.

2) Cold Spring: What does a walkable main street, unique products and friendly service add up to? A strong rural retail sector! In MinnPost’s most recent Rural Dispatches story, reporter Gregg Aamot features a number of small retailers in Cold Spring that have worked together to create a destination for tourists and residents alike.
Civic leaders say the retail sector in Cold Spring is as strong as it has been in two decades… many small towns with thriving retailer sectors have become “destinations” — in other words, places where people will spend a morning or an afternoon, knowing they can find good food, one-of-a-kind products, and personable service.
3) Deer River: Who would have thought the key to effective programming for kids would start with asking them what they wanted!? That’s exactly what Chad Evans at the Deer River Boys and Girls Club did and it landed them third place in Ignite Afterschool’s Believe It. Build It. Contest. Believe It. Build It. (BIBI) is a guide for effective afterschool practices. Here’s what Chad had to say about how he’s used the BIBI resources:
There have been activities and lessons that seem to just come and go without any real thought. Now, we will ensure all of our activies, lessons and programs have a purpose and desired outcomes we can track. We will offer time for reflections and all of our programs will feel connected.
