Grants director Sonja Merrild takes part in event to raise money for hunger relief

Dancing taste buds and a singing server – this year’s Second Harvest North Central Food Bank Chef’s Gala surprised all the senses. The annual benefit to raise money for hunger relief in northern Minnesota featured our own Sonja Merrild as a celebrity server.
As part of the event’s entertainment, celebrity servers were auctioned off to attendees. Sharing with the crowd a custom from her homeland, Denmark, Sonja sang a song to kick off the feast. Here’s a snippet…
Second Harvest – a pillar of food support
Asked this new girl … to tell you a bit of herself
I am but a Danish surprise … who to this occasion shall rise
Let’s stand and toast and thank our host
Second Harvest we love the most.
The crowd finished toasting, and the bidding ensued. After a quick-fire round of waving paddles, Sonja was “sold” to the Blandin Foundation table (pictured below).
Servers from area restaurants marched out to deliver delectable dishes prepared by local chefs.
From the auction, to the tick sales, and tips left for the servers, the community raised enough money for 89,000 meals. This will help feed the 52,452 households that frequent the food shelf every year.
Blandin Foundation was glad to take part in such an uplifting event!
